Evaluation and Adaption

Effective and sustainable integration of mindfulness into the pharmacy practice largely depends on adhering to effective evaluation and adaptation processes. Organizations must actively adopt rigorous measurement systems for assessing the impacts of mindfulness interventions on a range of crucial outcomes if mindfulness programs are to be as effective and for sustained acceptance by pharmacy practitioners. These need to be quantifiable outcomes like reported levels of stress change, drug error numbers, job satisfaction, as well as qualitative response in the form of perceived patient contact quality and overall well being at work. A mixed mode evaluation strategy must be employed.

Pre and post implementation questionnaires can provide useful quantitative data on change in stress, satisfaction, and awareness of mindfulness. Analysis of error incident reports can identify whether mindfulness training is linked with lower error rates. Notably, qualitative data from repeat focus groups, individual interviews, and open questions can yield rich information on the lived experience of the pharmacy staff that can solicit what are effective components of the mindfulness programs and where they need to be refined. Impeccable and thorough examination of this accumulated data is critical.

Regular examination will enable organizations to note effective mindfulness practices that are positively impacting and identify areas where the current approach could be lacking or not meeting employees' needs. Adaptability is the key to successful integration. Mindfulness training must not be fixed or ‘one size fits all’ but must constantly continue to change and adapt to the specific needs, interests, and feedback of the pharmacy team. Constant review, reflection, and revision will build a culture of creative continuous development, so mindfulness activities are relevant, meaningful, and ingrained in day to day work and professional life of the pharmacy. By putting this ongoing evaluation and readjustment first, the pharmacy profession can be certain that its gamble on consciousness actually pays off in a more robust, mission driven, and empathetic workforce ultimately paying dividends to practitioners themselves as well as to patients they serve.
