Organization and Culture
To truly embed mindfulness within the pharmacy profession, there needs to be a concerted organizational and cultural effort, as opposed to isolated interventions aimed at implementing a facilitative environment. Recognizing that dislike of work is likely a number one motivator, especially in high stress professions like pharmacy where patient well being is paramount, developing emotional intelligence and mindful leadership is an obligation that benefits all. When there are functional pharmacists who can manage their own emotions and set an example by being there and empathetic, not only is it healthier for themselves, but they also make the workplace healthier and less toxic for everyone else.

To encourage such change, hospital chains and large chains of pharmacies can actively offer complete Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programs or low cost online modules of training to reduce the stress prevalent among doctors and other healthcare professionals. Such training modules can impart effective coping mechanisms and tools for stress management, enhance the power of endurability, increase the capacity for concentration, and make a better emotional control. Further, the addition of special rooms for wellness or quiet rooms as part of the pharmacy environment offers tangible support for employees to take short renewing breaks in the midst of their hectic days, a respite from the pervasive sensory and mental stimulation they continuously face.
Further, however, the integration of mindfulness requires more than formal programs and special rooms. It requires shifting towards a culture where thoughtful communication is fostered and promoted at every level. Developing supportive environments for active listening, empathy, and non judgmental communication between workers can result in enhanced cooperation, less miscommunication, and an even more compassionate and cooperative workplace. Leadership mindfulness is key to this transformation, with managers and supervisors as leaders, leading by example, demonstrating presence, emotional awareness, and empathic decision-making and thereby creating a smarter workplace culture. Last but not least, by embedding mindfulness in the very fabric of the organization, we have the ability to build a profession that honors both the welfare of its practitioners and the practice of excellent patient care.
